Our Oysters

There’s many reasons why we, at Tuckers Island Shellfish Company, love oysters. For one, we think they’re delicious. They also help remove nitrogen in the waters, ours are also are disease resistant. Not to mention, they’re also good for you! Raw oysters have a protein content of about 9 percent and a fat content of less than 2 percent. One-half pound of raw oysters contains about 150 calories. Oysters are a good source of essential minerals including phosphorus, calcium, potassium, zinc and iodine. The quantities of vitamins found in oysters are negligible except for vitamin B-12. Three ounces of oysters provide more that 1 gram of omega-3 fatty acids. Oysters also have a very high content of iron. Bon appétit!

Our Company

Our company grows it’s oysters near the legendary island of Tucker’s Island. This small island is the Jersey Shore’s Atlantis. Once, it lay off the southern end of Long Beach Island. Tuckers Island was a resort, a home, and life for many in the late 19th century. The island had a lighthouse, life saving station, and two resorts. They ate fish, clams and oysters nearly every day of their lives. As legend has it, sickness of any kind was rare. The island became known as “Sea Haven”. On October 12, 1927, the historic house with its light tower fell dramatically into the sea while a photographer recorded the event. Within the next five years, the island of “Sea Haven” would cease to exist.
